Alan W Decho
Professor
University of South Carolina
USA
Alan W Decho(Biography)
Dr. Decho is Professor and Director of the Microbial Interactions Laboratory at the University of South Carolina Arnold School of Public Health. He also serves as Associate Dean for Research. Dr. Decho primary research interests center on attached forms of bacteria, called 'Biofilms', and the use of nanotechnology for combatting biofilms. The biofilm allows bacteria to act as coordinated groups rather than as individual cells, and are a center for natural antibiotic production. Biofilms contribute central roles in infection processes. The Decho lab is examining: (1) bacterial cell-cell communication (quorum sensing) and the use of nanoparticles to control QS; 2) searching natural environments for novel antibiotics to thwart biofilms, and 3) determining how nanoparticles can be used as antibiotic-delivery vehicles.
Alan W Decho(Research Area)
Alan Decho research interests center on attached forms of bacteria, called 'Biofillms'. The biofilm allows bacteria to act as a coordinated group rather than as individual cells. They form microscopic (invisible) coatings that are important in health, disease and environmental processes. In health, biofilms commonly occur in/on human body in many areas. They are important to proper health, but also play central roles in infection. They are also the predominant form of microbial life in natural environments. Dr. Decho currently teaches a graduate-undergraduate course on 'Biofilms in the Environment, Health and Disease.

Mingtao Zeng(Research Area)
Developing next-generation vaccines against human respiratory pathogens such as influenza viruses, Streptococcus pneumoniae, nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) and agents important for biodefense, such as Bacillus anthracis, botulinum neurotoxins and Francisella tularensis. Our multi-component candidate vaccines are being formulated and delivered by noninvasive nasal, oral, or transcutaneous manners using recombinant viruses, bacteria, plasmid DNA and detoxified bacterial toxins as vaccine antigen delivery vehicles. The noninvasive and easy administration procedures are expected to eliminate pain associated with needle injection, to reduce the requirement for specially trained personnel and equipment, and to permit rapid vaccine deployment in a short time frame at a low cost.
